After a long weekend of playing KOW my local gaming group
decided to play something a little different, to which we continued with our
Descent game. Once again this was who was playing and what they are:
·Ryan - Gaming master/DM/The Boss man(In secret a
·Will as Mad Carthos - A necromancer with his
trusty skeleton who's name changed every time a new one was raised (this was
·Gareth as Bogran the Shadow - A thief that was
renamed Bogan the Gimp due to the gimp mask he was wearing
·Rob as Elder Mok - A not so healing, healer that
did quite well in combat. Oh and he is a Ork
·ME as Grisban the Thirsty - A thirsty dwarf
knight that must have been a slayer as he ran off to try to take on all the
enemies at once.
At this point we were able to clear out everything quite
easily and now I have a fancy new cloak that takes away a surge away from the enemy
and a new mini hammer that has more potential for damage.
The next area we went to explore was the Cardinal’s Plight
where we were sent to rescue the Cardinal from a Necromancer grasp at the Cathedral.
But along the way, as we were crossing a bridge we were gang banged by a lot of
tentacle arms coming from the depths. Luckily for our band of merry men Grisban
was able to halt the attack of the tentacles before too much damage was done.
Part 1 – Cathedral’s entrance way
We got to the entrance way of the Cathedral that we were
sent to save the Cardinal to see a bunch of skeleton bowmen and sorcerers. In
the background we could hear the Necromancer starting to raise zombies.
We all ran straight towards the skeletons and managed to
take them out apart from the master skeleton that shoot and ran away. The
problem is that it took too long as it gave the Sorcerers chance to advance and
cast spells which KO Mok which Bogran spent time healing.
By time we got ready enough to advance to even start looking
for the key for the door the Necromancer had finished summoning the zombies and
we manage to open the door only to see the Necromancer to slink away into the
Such a big failure for us as this would come back to bite us
inside the Cathedral. The Necromancer was the best summoner that we saw as he
never failed to summon a Zombie.
Part 2 – Inside the Cathedral
Inside we could hear the scream’s from the Cardinal from the
next room and then the shuffling of the Zombies that were raised outside
heading towards him. However, the way was blocked by hell hounds and a magic
We managed to take down all of hell hound really quickly and
pushed up to the alter in the middle as this would heal the Cardinal. But the
Zombies were hungry for brains and took no time to injure him, we were able to
get to the alter and bring heal him up a little. Graisban push into the door to the right to
where goblin archers were skulking somehow they managed to not only wound the
dwarf but do enough to knock him out in one turn of shooting.
As this happened the Zombies brought the Cardinal down to
which the Band of hero’s fled from the Cathedral as there was nothing left for
[Just an overview we only got 4 turns in the first map and 3
turns in the second which is the fastest possible for the overlord to win. Well
Back in town we spent some money on better armour for me and
some other fancy gadgets. Then we got word to go to the Castle Daerion and save
as many of the villages that were stranded.
Castle Daerion mission part 1
While walking through the outlying village we stumbled onto
some fish monsters and sorcerers that had started to ransack the town. Seeing
the suffering we started our advance to rescue the suffering villages but we
were unable to even injure the first fish monster. In return the fish monsters did some wounds
but nothing that couldn’t be shaken off.
The second round of combat saw one of the fish monsters drop
and the other wounded. Borgan ran past it and light the first beacon while Carthos
ran into the building and lit the second one. However, the furthest away
villager died to the onslaught of the sorcerers while the rest ran inside of
the house and hide away.
Thinking we would be able to stem the tide of evil being at
the doors we climb inside. Once inside with the door shut the sorcerers open
them to then deal enough to knock out Mok. Deciding that the only way to keep
the villagers safe would be to light the last two beacons a plan was hatched to
get to both of them in one turn.
Firstly Bogran in the gimp masked casually strolled through
the monsters like they were nothing before running a full pace. Mok was placed back on his feet and he
started running as there was a gap big enough for him to fit as he managed to
light the 3rd quickly then followed by Borgan. The last thing happened
was the master sorcerer attacked Carthos twice and blew himself out, knocking
out Carthos in the process.
However, with all of the beacons lit there was a sigh of relief
as the monster fled from the field of battle. But so much damage was sustained from
the scuffle that we would need time to heal before continuing on.
Cathos has taken max damage, Mok has taken 5 and Grisban had
As it was getting late we called it a night here.
In the next game we will be pushing into the depths of the
castle Daerion to see what plunder is there for us to take.
The very next day the event continued with many people taking the same list as the day before. But not me and my friend Rob as we swapped armies and I got to play with his dwarf list. Which is:
1 x Regiment of Ironguard
1 x Troop of Sharpshooters
2 x Hordes of Shieldbreakers
1 x Troop of Berserker Brock Riders - brew of haste
1 x Regiment of Berserker Brock Riders - potion of the caterpillar
2 x Cannons
2 x Standard Bearer - one with SCrying Gem of Zellak
Berserker Lord - on a brock with the blade of the beast slayer
King - wings of Honeymaze
So it had some toys and fun was to be had but it is still a dwarf list that has its own set of problems.
Game 1 - Dominate - Jayden with Basileans
I really didn't like this match up, Jayden had hordes that were fighter then mine, heaps of flying monsters with healing. oh joy...I managed to get first turn and I was able to line up a few of the flying character with the brocks that kept them at bay for now.
Jayden replied by just moving around a little. I Jayden the chance on the right flank an then the string of great rolls from Jayden started. He route the small brocks along with the horde of shield breakers only failing to wound with a few dice.
By doing this I was still able to clear up the horse horde and dealt with the big horde in the middle. I did make a mistake here by not placing the brocks into the same target and blocking up the left horde with my fly character but who was I to know.
Some great more rolls from Jayden saw the brocks downed by one unit along with the steam tank. At that point turn 6 has ended if it did I would have drew. But it didn't so onto turn 7 and I was able to flank the dragon so I put everything into it. Got him on Double one's and preceded to roll that.
I think that Jayden didn't expect such a hard game from Dwarfs as if it ended turn 6 then it would have been a draw or if I didn't roll double one's it would have been a draw.
Instead it was a big loss 17-3 against but it was a close first game with a dwarf list I have never played with.
Game 2 - Pillage - Ryan with Twilight Kin
I was thinking yay I get to play against Ryan and the Twilight Kin list that won yesterday, well I got to try hard. Once again I got first turn and got to push up. which is very helpful.
The left flank was going well having drawn out the units early and being able to flank what was there. On the right flank I pushed forward and the one unit of archers managed to take out a horde of shield breakers the regiment of De6 iron guard as well as king oh those last two were in combat.
Then on the left flank one bolt thrower took everything but the horde in the middle. everything was a bit late for Ryan I was able to use the Stank to block off the archers from getting within 3 and the horde was able to line up between two.
Last ditch effort was for the archers to take on the Stank but was unable to shift it.
So through a bit of luck I was able to make this a win rather then a loss, Ryan was able to bring back from all of the damage I was doing which shows how great of a player he is and it was only through luck was I able to win. I went up 15-5.
Round 3 - Loot - Neil and his varangur
Neil had the need, the need for speed. In a loot game against dwarfs oh good I had a hard game in front of me. So I placed my speed on one flank and on the other I pretty much just gave up as I couldn't focus on both in the middle through I lined up so I can charge turn one if the speed picks it up turn one. Neil did, he picked up the left and center one in turn one. yippy. However I was able to charge in the center and waver the holder of the unit.
Things went down hill for Neil from here the cannons managed to hit more then once which gave me the right flank so now it was one a piece. With the center being very well covered by the hordes his knights had no other option but to charge. This was just what the hordes needed as they were able to pull apart the rest of the units.
The little flying character that Neil had left managed to kill the brocks and 2 cannons by the end of the game.
It turned out to big a second big win for the dwarfs 18-2 and it just showed when cannons hit they do a lot of damage, pity this was the only game they really did anything. Sorry Neil
Game 4 - Kill - Alan with Ratkin (NOT MANY PHOTOS TAKEN)
Last game of the weekend and I get to go against Ratkin, I had something to prove as day one I was only able to get a draw so I was trying to push for a win.
I was happy with my deployment as I had my fast stuff on the right which should clean up and then swing around. Not much happened.
Then BAM. On the right flank I rolled a double one which then meant I lost everything on it apart from the one Brock lord who took down the Demon spawn in the middle I double one a unit and got got double 6'd in return. However, I was able to still take a lot with me it just meant I didn't get through to the horde of archers and lost a unit to slaves.
But that's the way it goes. Calculated the point and oh I drew, great a 10-10 which could have gone much worse as I rolled bad through most of this game, Alan you made me happy.
Well at the end of the day I was thinking 'You know what I did OK' and then I looked at the results again and I came equal 4th with Rob using my brotherhood.
Rob did advise that the brotherhood list was pretty 'BULLSHIT' and I now agree as it is much worse then the dwarf list. Which was a big increase over yesterday score for him.
Thanks to Pete, Ryan and Peter for running/organizing the event and for the players as they are who keeps the games going.
So Saturday just went I attended Runefang which is a 2000pts KOW event to which I bought my Samurai Brotherhood army.
You will be able to see the list I have taken is listed in many other posts before now.
Round 1 - invade - Pete and his Ratkin
So having played Pete before in practice for the invade mission I new it would be hard to be able to push for the win. I tried to swing a flank while slowing down the other trying to keep them out of my half of the table.
Deployment was like this and I also got first turn so I pushed up heavily on one flank and started the dance in the middle.
So the left flank went really well however, the right flank was falling apart slowly but it wouldn't hold on long enough.
After a little while I through all was going well as I was lined up to take out the big blocks and the right flank was holding.
Right at the end I felt happy with my positioning as I had a lot of points of which all were scoring but with Ratkin all of the points were in the few little bits which were left.
This turned out to a draw as in a 10-10 split which I was happy with and was proven to be a good result when Pete trounced over Rob while playing with my list day 2.
Round 2 - Pillage - Hugh with Elves
2 shooting hordes and heaps of fast units, I though this could be hard as I could loose a lot to shooting really quickly. I got first turn which help me close the gap which was a good thing as i needed to deal with at least part of the shooting quickly.
I move up quite aggressively on the left flank to which the drakon horde turns to face. By doing this it meant I could get their flank aimed to another unit of knights.
So I took the flank charge and then put both of the knight units into the left flank so the left flank was mine and swung into the middle but somehow I could not do damage to regiment of spear. But at this point I was sitting on 3 objectives and Hugh only on 2.
However, Hugh's last turn of shooting managed to do 13 wounds out of 20 shots to a archer unit to then break the unit to pull it back to a draw.
So with a lucky last break Hugh got away with a 10-10 rather then me winning. That the breaks though as it is a dice game.
Round 3 - Loot - Mike and dwarfs
So drawing the dwarfs for loot was lucky for me and unfortunate for Mike. When I saw all of the shooting in the middle I was able to go for the left and right most tokens pretty unhindered.
So everything went to plan and I was able to take the left and right with minimal effort as that is where most of my units were. Noticing a turn to late Mike started moving the 4 organ guns forward to actually be able to shoot something.
At the end I held 2 of the token which gave me a big win as I hadn't lost to much by the end.
By the end of the game it put me above par and I was hopeful going into the last round as a another big win could be helpful.
Round 4 - Kill - Will with Kingdom of men/Ogres
I have played against a lot recently and my list is kind of a counter to will slow shooting list. I got first turn and was able to move and hide most of my stuff from the shooting. In 2 turns I was over the board and about to make my move all I had to do is weather some shoots.
Which I managed to do with very little payback I hit most thing that were right in front of me and routed nearly everything in sight.
The last peg hero hit a damaged unit of samurai in the flank to break them and then flew out of the way into the swain thinking he was going to be safe. Everything else in the army routed apart from the wizard and gunners.
The peg hero got counter charged by the swain and became wavered so in the last turn shooting from the swain and archer block was able to take him out.
This left me just outside of placing as I came 4th which I though was a great result despite the 2 draws to start with. Along with not loosing a game I felt pretty good and the list worked really well.
The following is a few pictures of my army leading into Runefang. Please note that this army is not finish being painted as I have only got most of the models to a foundation colour. Due to their not being a painting score, only a min standard being 3 colours.
